Sprockets

Gearing Technology

Steel sprocket with chain-pin hubs, a cylindrical hub, and evenly spaced teeth

A sprocket is used to transmit power via a chain and generate drive. To achieve optimal power transmission, the sprocket and chain must be matched to each other.

At Ringhoffer, we manufacture all types of sprockets using state-of-the-art, CNC-controlled machines. We offer single, double, and triple sprockets; sprockets with single-sided or double-sided hubs; as well as sprockets with hardened teeth, made of stainless steel, and in various sizes. We’d be happy to advise you and produce sprockets tailored to your specific needs.

Sprockets for roller chains and conveyor chains

There are two different types of sprockets: those designed for roller chains and those designed for conveyor chains. The most widely used type in engineering is theroller chain, which is used, for example, in bicycles. The bicycle chain runs over a sprocket, which transmits power and generates drive. For sprockets used with roller chains, it is important that the sprocket has a certain minimum number of teeth so that the chain speed remains as consistent as possible.

Asprocket for roller chainsis manufactured either as a sprocket disc or as a sprocket with a hub that is flush on one side. Single, double, or triple roller chains can be mounted on the hub. In contrast to sprockets for roller chains, those forconveyor chainsare disc sprockets with a hub on one or both sides. Regardless of the material used, these are not standardized. For the various types of roller chains, however, standardization was necessary to ensure that the chain type and intended use are always compatible. Broadly speaking, the distinction is made according to DIN 8187 for European-style roller chains and DIN 8188 for American-style roller chains. However, there are additional subcategories, particularly within the DIN 8187 standard. Reference tables are useful for maintaining a clear overview.

The Decisive Factor: Quality

How much a chain system can handle and how long it will last depends largely on the quality of the sprockets. To ensure that both the performance and service life of chain systems are sustained over the long term, Ringhoffermanufactures sprocketsof the highest quality. Only high-quality materials are used in the manufacture of precision products in our modern machine shops. This is complemented by optimized processes and quality assurance throughout the production process. All gear technicians at Ringhoffer are highly qualified and apply their knowledge and skills to develop innovative solutions for our customers.

Manufacturing by gear hobbing or gear shaping

Our sprockets are manufactured by milling or shaping—more specifically, through the processof gear hobbing or gear shaping. Gear hobbing is a highly flexible, highly productive, and continuous gear-cutting process. Because it enables very precise machining, it is widely used. The production method used also depends on the specific geometry. For gear hobbing, the material used should be, on average, no more than 400 mm to 1.5 inches wide. For gear shaping, 1 inch is the maximum machining width.
